Keep Your Kids Dancing at Home

This month, we’re bringing you Dancing Families at home with this virtual performance. After you watch it, try out some of these movement activities with your little (or not so little) ones at home. Voilá, you’ve passed some time, tuckered them out, and boosted their creativity — nice going, parent!

1. Freeze Dance You know the drill: When the music plays, you dance. When the music stops, you freeze. Add a challenge by making pauses more or less frequent or asking your dancer to freeze upside down/balancing on one foot.

2. Obstacle Course Leap onto pillow 'lily pads' on the floor. Tunnel between your couch and coffee table. Slither through chair legs. No fancy props needed. Let kids put the props in order then watch them cycle through no less than 20 times.

3. Scarf Float Maybe not the best use of tissues during a global pandemic, but they'll work if you don't have any silk/lightweight scarves. Toss scarves in the air, and catch on different body parts. Squiggle scarves like snakes. Crumble into hands and POP! like popcorn. Put one under each foot and use them like ice skates.

4. Tape Lines Place a couple of lines of painter's tape on the floor. Tiptoe, march, slide, leap over, crawl on, etc. the lines.
